Zeichen und Wunder
In March 2022 I was working on a series if collages for the upcoming 'Collage' group exhibition at the Barockschlössl Mistelbach. The war in Ukraine had just started. It was very much on my mind. Images in blue and yellow, the colours of the Ukrainian flag were everywhere on social media, but I did not want to jump on the bandwagon or make anything topical.
The title 'Signs and Miracles' came up, because that was what I hoped for. Also, I am very interested in social semiotics - the use of signs, symbols and icons for a long time. Every day I worked on collages, often with a heavy heart. A few days before the deadline I still was not satisfied with anything I had come up with. So, I discarded everything and started anew. Somehow, the blue and yellow and all the feelings and thoughts I had processed during the preceding weeks came through. The images can be read in multiple ways - somebody saw bombs and war references, where I see angels and signs of hope.
I also had the chance to display a few of my concertina artists books.
